Languages Department

The overall aims of the Modern Foreign Languages Department in St Ambrose College are:

  1. To promote a positive image of foreign language learning and speakers of foreign languages, including the culture and civilization of the countries where the language is spoken, as benefits a school in a multicultural society.
  2. To enable youngsters to develop the ability to use the language effectively for the purposes of practical communication, placing particular emphasis on communicative competence.
  3. To foster an awareness of, and interest in, the nature of language and language learning.
  4. To promote cross-curricular skills and learning skills of a more general application.
  5. To provide an enjoyable and intellectually stimulating experience.
  6. To encourage self-reliance and self-discipline in learning as well as personal reflection and decision-making.
  7. To promote global awareness and equal opportunities.
  8. To encourage maximum target language use by both teachers and students.
  9. To get the best out of everyone, to encourage every student to find success at his particular level and to achieve his full potential.
The overall aims with regard to  Latin  in St Ambrose College are to enable pupils:

  1. To develop an appropriate level of competence in the Latin language;
  2. To develop a sensitive and analytical approach to language generally, including an awareness of the relationship between Latin and the languages of today;
  3. To develop and apply analytical and evaluative skills at an appropriate level;
  4. To make an informed, personal response to the material studied;
  5. To learn how to communicate clearly and effectively;
  6. To engage actively in the process of enquiry into the classical world so that they develop as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers;
  7. To acquire, through studying a range of appropriate sources, knowledge and understanding of selected aspects of the classical world;
  8. To develop an awareness of the continuing influence of the classical world on later times and of the similarities and differences between the classical world and later times;
  9. To read and appreciate Latin literature in its cultural context and in its original language; 
  10. To find success at their particular level and to achieve their full potential;
  11. To have an enjoyable and intellectually stimulating experience.
