Being in direct contact with the culture of the language is essential in the learning of languages, and it is highly motivating for pupils.
French
Every Year 1 pupil is invited to take part in a visit to Normandy, France, in June, spending three nights at a holiday centre in the Cherbourg peninsula. During the day, places of interest are visited, including the Bayeux, the Mont St Michel and the Caen Memorial museum. It is an opportunity for pupils to practise their French and at the same time spend a few enjoyable days in France with their fellow Ambrosians as they complete their first year at the College.
In October, where numbers permit, Year 10 spend a week in Le Mans hosted by French families. They receive tuition in a local Catholic Secondary school and enjoy a range of leisure activities and cultural visits, including a day trip to the Futuroscope theme park and a day spent in Paris.
At the same time, 6th Formers spend a week in Caen, hosted by French families. The week’s activities include a visit to a local Sixth Form college, a day exploring places of historical, cultural and economic interest in the region, a day’s work experience and a day trip to Paris.
Spanish
Pupils in Year 10 and above will have the opportunity to take part in the trip to Málaga in the south of Spain. Pupils will follow a combination of Spanish lessons, cultural activities and time to enjoy the country and the culture. They will stay with Spanish families on a half-board regime.
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new lands but in seeing with new eyes.
