Geography KS3

Geography

The Department supports and reinforces the Mission of Edmund Rice and his Eight Essentials. All who are involved in the teaching and learning of geography will be valued for their individual contribution to the subject and will be expected to give of their best. Through geography, regardless of ability, race, religion, colour, culture, and social circumstance, students will be able to make more sense of their own surroundings and of the wider world and be able to take their place in it.

The Unique Contribution

Geography provokes and answers questions about the natural and human worlds. It develops knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, an understanding of maps and a range of investigative and problem solving skills which will help prepare students for adult life. Geography is also a focus within the curriculum for understanding and resolving issues about the environment and future development. In studying geography students encounter different societies and cultures. This should stimulate them to think about their own place in the world, their values and their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment.

In Year 1 the students are given a baseline test at the start of the year to assess how much Geography they have studied in their primary schools. This is followed by a general introduction to Physical, Human and Environmental aspects of the subject. All of the topics in the first three years are interactive lessons using the minibooks linked to the school network.

In Year 1 we look at the UK and Europe, map reading, weathering and erosion, settlement and coastal landforms.

In Year 2 we look at Africa, weather and climate, coastal landforms, limestone features and tourism.

The calling of the humanities is to make us truly human in the best sense of the word.
