80th Anniversary

In 2026, Saint Ambrose College proudly celebrates its 80th anniversary—a milestone that offers an opportunity to reflect, honour and look with confidence to the future.

Although the College was formally founded in 1946, its origins lie in the extraordinary events of the Second World War. Born out of courage, resilience and faith, Saint Ambrose College emerged from the determination of a group of De La Salle Brothers and seventy young evacuees who, in June 1940, left their home in Guernsey as the Channel Islands faced occupation.

Led by Brother Clarence, the party made the hazardous journey to England before eventually settling in Altrincham, where they found a warm welcome from the parish of St Vincent's. With the support of Canon Donnelly and the encouragement of Bishop Ambrose Moriarty of Shrewsbury, a house on Dunham Road, known as Oakleigh, became the new home of the school in October 1941.

In September 1942, the school was renamed Saint Ambrose College in honour of Bishop Ambrose Moriarty, whose vision and generosity had been instrumental in its establishment. When peace returned in 1945, the De La Salle Brothers went back to Guernsey, leaving behind a flourishing school, which passed into the care of the Irish Christian Brothers. The following year, 1946, marked the beginning of Saint Ambrose College as the school we know today.

Saint Ambrose College was founded on faith, service, excellence and community. Throughout this anniversary year, we will celebrate not only our history, but also the generations of pupils, staff, families and friends who have shaped the College and continue to inspire its future.

As we mark 80 years, we remember our extraordinary beginnings with gratitude and pride. The courage and commitment that gave birth to Saint Ambrose College continue to define who we are today—and will guide us for generations to come.
