Consultation on Uniform Policy
Consultation on School Uniform Branding
Implementation from September 2026
Introduction
The school is seeking the views of parents/carers and students on proposed changes to our school uniform policy, specifically regarding the four items to be branded
These changes are proposed in response to statutory guidance published by the Department for Education (DfE) on the cost of school uniforms. Schools are expected to have arrangements in place that comply with this guidance by September 2026.

This consultation is an important part of ensuring our uniform policy is affordable, practical, and fair, while continuing to reflect the values and identity of our school.
Background and Context
The DfE’s statutory guidance on the cost of school uniforms makes clear that:
· School uniform costs should be reasonable and represent best value for money
· Affordability should never be a barrier to attending a particular school or participating fully in school life
· Schools should keep branded items to a minimum
· Schools should engage with parents and pupils when developing or changing their uniform policy
· Schools must consider the total cost of uniform over a child’s time at the school
The guidance will be updated following the passage of the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, but schools are already expected to plan ahead and be compliant by September 2026.
Why Change Is Being Proposed
Currently, a number of items within both the main uniform and PE kit are branded. While these items contribute to a strong school identity, they can also:
· Limit where families can purchase uniform items
· Increase overall cost
· Reduce flexibility for families
The DfE guidance makes clear that from September 2026 a maximum of 4 items (including a tie) can be branded. Following a review by school leaders (including PE leaders) and discussion with governors, we are proposing that the branded items be those listed below.
Proposed Branded Items (from September 2026)
1. School blazer
2. School tie
3. Reversible rugby shirt
4. Rugby shorts
Rationale
· The blazer and tie are core elements of school identity and daily uniform.
· The reversible rugby shirt is required for curriculum PE and competitive fixtures.
· The rugby shorts have been proposed as a branded item because their durability and quality mean they can be worn:
- For indoor and outdoor PE lessons
- For competitive fixtures This reduces the need for multiple PE-specific garments.
Items That Would No Longer Be Branded
If the proposal is approved, the following items would become generic (non-branded) and could be purchased from any retailer:
PE and Sportswear
· Swim jammers
· Swimming caps
· PE socks
· Navy summer PE polo shirt
· Any other PE clothing not listed above
Main Uniform
· The grey jumper with trim would be replaced by a generic grey V-neck jumper
These changes are intended to increase choice, reduce cost, and make it easier for families to replace items as needed.
Impact on Families
· There will be no requirement to replace existing uniform immediately
· The changes would apply from September 2026
· A phased approach would be taken to ensure families are not disadvantaged
· Support with uniform costs will continue to be available for eligible families
What We Are Consulting On
We would particularly welcome views on:
1. The specific items proposed to remain branded
2. The removal of branding from PE kit and other uniform items
3. Any practical or financial considerations we should take into account
