A Tribute to Liam O’Connor

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our former students, Liam O’Connor.  Tragically, Liam was struck by a car on Saturday morning in Newcastle where he had just completed his second year at Newcastle University pursuing a degree in Maths and Finance.

Liam attended Saint Ambrose College from September 2014 to Summer 2021 following in the footsteps of his older brother Sean, who left just a couple of years earlier.  During Liam’s time at the college he embraced every opportunity with gratitude and excitement, studying Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics at A level.  He enriched our college community beyond measure and was an exceptionally talented, kind and gentle young man.  We are immensely proud that Liam was and always will be an Ambrosian.

A huge part of Liam’s journey at the college was his love for sport. He excelled in many sports as evidenced through him holding the all-time school records for year 9 and 10 hurdles and the Victor Ludorum trophy as best athlete, but it was his love and passion for rugby that was undeniable. Liam made his debut for the First XV when only in year 11, he was a stand-out member of the team throughout his time in Sixth Form as well as on the rugby tours to South America and Ireland where he was presented with the Man of the Match award.  Liam's rugby success continued outside of school where he represented Lancashire at every age group before moving to Sale Sharks.

We appreciate how difficult this devastating news will be for Ambrosians past and present, their families, our staff and the wider community to process.  If you want to get in touch to share any memories of Liam or to chat with any members of staff, please do not hesitate to contact the college.  Our chaplain, Mr Murray, can be contacted by email or telephone, 0161 980 2711 / mrtmurray@st-ambrosecollege.org.uk .  We invite you share any messages you would like us to include in our Book of Remembrance in the Chapel and we will also seek to put plans in place for a long-term memorial for Liam.

We share our deepest condolences to Liam’s family and all his friends.  We feel privileged to have shared part of Liam’s life and he will always remain in our hearts and minds.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,

And let perpetual light shine upon him.

May he rest in peace.
